Weird question maybe but if Im a co-applicant on a apartment?
Did you sign the lease as a co-tenant or are you named as an other occupant? If you are on the lease as a tenant of record, the landlord can terminate the old lease and give the remaining tenant a lease without you. If you are listed as an occupant - no obligations, so no changes need be made - you just leave. To take you off the lease, the landlord and other tenant of record must agree. Otherwise, if you are a tenant of record and leave mid lease, you are responsible for the remaining rent just as the tenant who stayed is - no different. If the tenant who stayed cant pay one month - you are liable for the full amount due. Laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. Consult your local residential tenancy act. Read the lease. Talk to the landlord - most will let you out if you actually ask and have a good reason.
